"Project A Buoy"
2022
Mixed Media with Printmaking
intaglio, cyano type, etching, plaster, resin, paper, fabric
The project ‘Buoy’ explores the relationship between the reproducibility and indexicality of prints through an installation featuring objects.
The printed objects, though visually replicated, lack the original temperature, texture, or temporality, leaving them as lifeless shells. These indifferently reproduced objects, stripped of their original functions, retain only their indexicality. Like empty shells, they are detached from their utility and reduced to mere signs.
The artist views and metaphorically compares the hollow nature of these reproductions to buoys. Objects that have lost their functionality and materiality become anonymous, empty entities, akin to buoys drifting on the surface of the sea, holding only their indexical function.
Through these replicas, which erase everything except their indexical function, the viewer is confronted with a paradoxical situation. The objects are visible but cannot be felt, creating a sensory contradiction. This disruption of perception invites viewers to imagine the absent temperature, texture, and temporality, or to recall intimate personal experiences.
The Buoy project replicates everyday objects from urban spaces, including natural elements, books, records, and decorative items, assigning them reproducibility and indexicality while stripping away their functionality.
Utilizing materials such as plaster, resin, digital prints, and etching, the project transforms these objects into print-based forms devoid of functionality.
