The "Analog Distance, Digital Distance" project interprets the relationship and boundaries between analog and digital through print media, exploring the physical and spatial senses of contemporary individuals caught between these two realms.
We exist at the boundary between analog and digital, experiencing a dual sense of space and physicality.
In the analog era, spatial perception was proportional to time and distance, closely tied to the development of civilization. The advancement of transportation expanded the range of mobility and reduced travel time—from sailboats to steamships, and eventually airplanes—shortening time while expanding space.
Building on this analog spatiotemporal experience, modern individuals' spatial experience has transformed: with a single click, we can explore the farthest corners of the globe using data-driven coordinates, even without physically visiting those places.
This project simulates a digital journey using the principles of data mapping. By leveraging Python programming, it generates digital travel coordinates based on longitude and latitude.
For instance, the straight-line distance from Seoul to Tokyo is approximately 1,200 km (1,159 km). Starting with the coordinates of a park in Seoul as the initial point and coding the latitude and longitude coordinates of Narita Airport in Tokyo, Python outputs this data as a print measuring 1,100 mm x 55 mm.
While the 1,200 km symbolizes the analog spatial experience of traveling between Seoul and Tokyo, the 1,100 mm x 55 mm data print represents the digital spatial experience as a recorded artifact and object.
The installation, comprising printed outputs and video imagery layered within the exhibition space, features binary streams representing the encoded data. These elements symbolize the digitized physical experience through the exhibition space.
